Creiriau is a collaboration between artist Steffan Dafydd (Penglog) and writer Dyfan Lewis (Gwasg Pelydr), which celebrates the creation and collaboration between different artistic disciplines. These will be live events where improvised music will accompany artists and writers. From a creative perspective, it is very experimental, where art, music and words unite and move in unexpected and emotional directions. A taste of this can be found in the short video below by Sam Stevens.

So why choose this project? I went to a Creiriau event earlier this year in Cardiff (see poster below) and it was a special experience. Before I even started reflecting on the creative side, the first thing that struck me was the strong element of hope being conveyed. It was an event to raise money for Doctors Without Borders and despite the sad themes discussed and presented in the poems and readings, there were also incredibly strong and sincere elements where the concept of hope was discussed in detail. In a way, the creative element reflected this – that is, that the charming but structure-free music represented the goal of trying to find direction and unity in harsh and unexpected situations while the lyrics represented the hope and light that lead the way.

It was really important for me to be able to choose a mix of works and projects to be able to present a more balanced and accurate image of what is going on in Wales from a creative point of view – whether in terms of scale, the work itself or funding. In this sense, it is therefore important to note that Creiriau is a completely independent project that has not received any sponsorship or financial support from the Arts Council or Wales Arts International.
